Gauteng AIDS Council and Child Sector Launch Global Alliance Plan to End AIDS in Children by 2030

Johannesburg, South Africa – March 2025 – In a decisive step toward eliminating AIDS in children, the Gauteng AIDS Council, in collaboration with the Gauteng Children Sector, has officially launched the Global Alliance to End AIDS in Children by 2030 Plan. This initiative aims to address disparities in access to HIV care and treatment among children and adolescents in Gauteng, ensuring a future free of stigma and discrimination.

The launch, which coincides with Human Rights Month under the theme “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights,” underscores the fundamental right of every child to equitable healthcare. The initiative highlights the urgent need for zero discrimination in HIV-related services and the removal of systemic barriers that prevent children and adolescents from receiving timely and comprehensive care.

Addressing Inequality in HIV Treatment

Despite significant progress in combating HIV/AIDS, children and adolescents remain disproportionately affected by gaps in access to treatment and prevention services. According to health experts, socioeconomic challenges, stigma, and limited healthcare infrastructure continue to hinder the full realization of children’s rights to HIV care. The Global Alliance initiative seeks to bridge these gaps through policy advocacy, strengthened healthcare systems, and community-driven interventions.

“We cannot end the AIDS epidemic without prioritizing children. Every child deserves a fair chance at a healthy future, free from the barriers of discrimination and inadequate healthcare access,” stated a representative from the Gauteng AIDS Council.

A Multi-Stakeholder Approach

The launch event brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, healthcare providers, and international partners, all committed to achieving an AIDS-free generation. By aligning with global best practices and localized interventions, the initiative aims to accelerate HIV prevention and treatment efforts, particularly in under-resourced communities.

The Path to 2030

The Global Alliance to End AIDS in Children by 2030 Plan outlines a comprehensive roadmap, focusing on:

  • Strengthening early diagnosis and treatment for infants and children living with HIV
  • Expanding access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and ensuring adherence support
  • Enhancing community-based programs to reduce stigma and promote inclusivity
  • Integrating pediatric HIV services within broader child health and social protection programs

With the unwavering commitment of the Gauteng Provincial Government and health stakeholders, this initiative is a significant milestone in the province’s ongoing efforts to eradicate pediatric HIV/AIDS.

As South Africa continues its fight against the epidemic, the successful implementation of this plan will serve as a beacon of hope for future generations, reaffirming the nation’s dedication to upholding the health and human rights of all children.
