Hoy Park Upgrade Brings Renewed Life to Sydenham Public Space
The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), acting on behalf of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), has completed the long-anticipated upgrade of Hoy Park in Ward 72, Sydenham. The revitalisation initiative forms part of the City of Johannesburg’s broader strategy to improve public infrastructure and deliver inclusive, safe, and accessible community spaces.
The newly upgraded park now features a fully lit soccer field, multipurpose sports courts, modernised ablution facilities, spectator grandstands, and paved walkways with lighting. Secure perimeter fencing has also been installed to enhance safety for park users.

The project responds to the city’s development goals as outlined in the Joburg Growth and Development Strategy 2040 (GDS2040), which prioritises urban greening, equitable access to amenities, and community wellness. Local government has identified public spaces as key enablers of social cohesion, physical activity, and youth engagement.
Ward 72 residents, who have long called for improvements to the facility, are expected to benefit from the transformation of Hoy Park into a functional multi-use recreational site. The investment aims to create a well-maintained environment where children can play, families can gather, and local sports development can thrive.
The JDA confirmed that the upgrades were implemented in partnership with City Parks and Zoo, as part of an interdepartmental approach to improving local infrastructure. The project is one of several public space enhancements being delivered across Johannesburg.
Hoy Park’s completion underscores the city’s commitment to building a resilient and inclusive urban environment, in line with national and provincial policy priorities on sustainable human settlements and liveable cities. The site is now fully open to the public.
