MEC Tasneem Motara Strengthens Project Oversight to Fast-Track Human Settlements Delivery

MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development Tasneem Motara met with the Development Planning Unit today to review the pipeline of human settlements projects currently under planning. The discussions covered brownfield, greenfield, and infill developments, with a strong focus on assessing their progress and identifying areas for acceleration.

In a follow-up engagement, the MEC also convened with Regional Project Managers and Senior Managers to evaluate project performance across Gauteng. The session assessed delivery against the Department’s business plan targets and addressed implementation challenges that may affect timelines.

Driving Interventions to Unlock Bottlenecks
These oversight sessions are designed to highlight obstacles on the ground and introduce targeted interventions to speed up project implementation. A key focus was placed on budget expenditure, cash flow management, and ensuring timely payments to contractors and service providers.

The MEC emphasised the importance of escalating integration and coordination matters through Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) forums with municipalities. She stressed that collaboration between spheres of government remains central to delivering sustainable human settlements at scale.

“We need structured coordination and fast decision-making to avoid delays. Interdepartmental alignment is the foundation of efficient service delivery,” said Motara.

Building Sustainable Communities
The reviewed projects form part of a broader provincial strategy to create well-located, integrated communities that support spatial transformation. Brownfield and greenfield developments aim to unlock new housing opportunities, while infill projects strengthen urban density and optimise existing infrastructure.

This approach supports the Department’s #VisibleDelivery, #ServiceDeliveryInAction, and #ProjectPerformance initiatives — ensuring that human settlements delivery is tracked, monitored, and executed with clear accountability.
