President Cyril Ramaphosa Honours Dr TT Cholo with Isithwalandwe/Seaparankwe Award on His 100th Birthday

Johannesburg — In a moment rich with history and emotion, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa conferred the Isithwalandwe/Seaparankwe Award on veteran freedom fighter Dr Tlou Theophilus “TT” Cholo as he marked his 100th birthday.

The award, the highest honour bestowed by the African National Congress, recognises individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to South Africa’s liberation struggle. It symbolises courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to justice and equality.

Dr Cholo’s recognition was first announced during the ANC’s 113th Anniversary celebrations in January 2025 in Khayelitsha, Western Cape. The official presentation took place yesterday, with President Ramaphosa personally handing over the award — a moment that united reflection, respect, and celebration.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Ramaphosa described Dr Cholo as a “pillar of the liberation movement whose life embodies the values of sacrifice, discipline, and devotion to the people of South Africa.”

Born in 1925, Dr Cholo’s activism began in the 1940s when he joined the ANC Youth League. Over the decades, he played a key role in organising workers, resisting apartheid oppression, and contributing to the broader struggle for equality and democracy.

Yesterday’s ceremony was attended by senior ANC leaders, veterans, and family members, who paid tribute to Dr Cholo’s legacy and enduring influence. The atmosphere was one of pride and gratitude as speakers reflected on a century of service to the nation.

“Dr Cholo represents the best of who we are — a generation that fought not for personal gain, but for the freedom of others,” said one of the attendees.

The Isithwalandwe/Seaparankwe Award has been conferred on only a select few in South African history, including Nelson Mandela, Albertina Sisulu, and Oliver Tambo. Dr Cholo’s name now joins this distinguished list of patriots whose lives helped shape the country’s democratic path.
