Amajimbos Make History with World Cup Opener Win — Premier Lesufi Sends Off Team with Words of Support

South Africa’s national Under-17 men’s football team, the Amajimbos, have opened their FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign with a landmark 3-1 victory over Bolivia U17 in Doha, Qatar — their first-ever win at a U-17 World Cup.

Before their departure, the team received an official send-off from Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who joined officials from the South African Football Association to wish the young squad success on the world stage. Lesufi urged the players to “play with pride and discipline” and to represent the spirit of a united South Africa.

Despite being reduced to ten men early in the match, the Amajimbos held their composure. Emile Witbooi, one of the team’s standout talents, opened the scoring before Neo Bohloko doubled the lead with a precise strike. Shaun Els sealed the historic win with a late goal, capping a performance that demonstrated both technical skill and mental strength.

As reported by IOL and Eyewitness News, the victory places South Africa at the top of Group A ahead of their upcoming match against hosts Qatar U17.

Head Coach Duncan Crowie praised his players’ resilience and composure, calling it “a performance that reflects the progress of our youth football.”

The result signals a new chapter for South Africa’s junior football — one that builds on renewed investment in youth development and showcases the growing strength of local talent.
