The City of Johannesburg has reaffirmed its authority to regulate informal trading in the inner city following a recent court ruling. The decision reinforces the city’s ability to enforce by-laws, ensure compliance, and maintain a safe and orderly urban trading environment.
Executive Mayor Dada Morero emphasised that the ruling supports the city’s ongoing efforts to formalise informal trading. Traders are now encouraged to participate in the accelerated verification and permit process, running from 4 to 18 November 2025 at the Opportunity Centre, 66 Jorissen Place, Braamfontein.
Applicants must bring identification documents, proof of residence, JPC registration documents, relevant permits, and certificates to secure formal trading status. The process aims to improve compliance with city by-laws while fostering a safer and more orderly business environment.
Morero stated, “This initiative is designed to formalize trading activities, improve compliance with by-laws, and foster a safe and orderly trading environment,” underscoring the city’s commitment to structured urban management.
The ruling and permit drive form part of broader strategies to ensure economic inclusion, while maintaining urban order and safety in Johannesburg’s commercial hubs.
