Gauteng MEC Vuyiswa Ramokgop Celebrates Indigenous Foods at #RootsAndRecipes Book Launch

Yesterday, MEC Vuyiswa Ramokgop of the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development attended the #RootsAndRecipes book launch at Nirox Sculpture Park in Gauteng. The event, hosted in partnership with the United Nations, highlighted South Africa’s rich indigenous foods and celebrated the culinary heritage of local communities.

The #RootsAndRecipes cookbook features sustainable, nutritious, and locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the diversity of African cuisine while honouring the farmers, chefs, and communities who preserve traditional food practices. MEC Ramokgop noted that initiatives like this strengthen local agriculture, encourage food security, and promote cultural pride.

The launch also underscored the role of indigenous crops and culinary knowledge in building resilient communities and fostering sustainable farming practices across Gauteng. By linking local farmers with culinary experts, the project aims to create new opportunities for small-scale producers and promote the cultural significance of South African foods on a global stage.

“This celebration of our culinary heritage is not only about preserving traditions but also about supporting Gauteng’s agricultural economy, creating jobs, and strengthening rural livelihoods,” said MEC Ramokgop.
