Following a recent engagement with President Cyril Ramaphosa, the City of Johannesburg, in coordination with the Department of Home Affairs, carried out an extensive immigration and identity verification operation in the Mayfair area yesterday.
The initiative involved a joint effort between the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and Home Affairs officials. During the operation, authorities detained 217 women and more than 400 men identified as undocumented foreign nationals. All individuals are currently being processed in accordance with South African legal requirements.
City officials emphasized that the operation was carried out in strict adherence to the rule of law and underscores the municipality’s commitment to restoring safety and order in Johannesburg. Executive Mayor Dada Morero expressed appreciation to President Ramaphosa for responding to the city’s request for Home Affairs support in tackling irregular immigration.
“This coordinated operation demonstrates our resolve to enforce bylaws effectively while protecting the rights and dignity of all residents,” said Mayor Morero.
The Mayfair operation is part of ongoing efforts by the City of Johannesburg to address safety concerns, manage urban security challenges, and ensure compliance with national immigration laws. Authorities confirmed that the processing of detainees will follow due legal procedures, including verification of identities and appropriate administrative measures.
The city continues to stress collaboration between municipal and national agencies as key to maintaining law and order while fostering an inclusive and secure urban environment.
