The Gauteng Department of Health held a follow-up meeting with Community Health Workers in Johannesburg today. The session was led by the MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, whose ongoing engagement with workers began on 21 October 2025.
According to the department, the purpose of the meeting was to give practical answers to concerns raised during the first discussion. The MEC used the session to explain what has already been implemented and what still needs attention. She said the department wants to strengthen support systems for workers in every district.
In a statement shared through the official Gauteng Health account at Gauteng Health, the department confirmed that new administrative processes have started. These include clearer reporting lines, updated supervision structures and improvements in basic resources needed for daily outreach work. The department said these steps aim to improve safety, communication and workload management for teams working in communities.

MEC Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko told workers that the province values their contribution as the first point of contact for many households. She said the department is working with finance and human resources teams to finalise further operational changes. These include reviewing equipment shortages and improving training schedules.
Community Health Workers play a central role in home based care, chronic medication delivery, early detection of illness and health education. Gauteng relies on more than ten thousand workers to support clinics and hospitals. Many of the concerns raised in the first meeting related to workload pressure, unclear contracts and limited support from supervisors. Workers also asked for improved safety measures when travelling through high risk areas.
The department said it will continue to meet with workers until all priority matters are resolved. The MEC urged teams to keep raising issues through formal channels so that solutions can be tracked and communicated. The department plans to release a progress update before the end of the year through Gauteng Health.
Officials say the province wants to build a healthier workforce and a stronger support system for communities. The programme forms part of the ongoing AsibeHealthyGP initiative, which promotes better access to health services in Gauteng.
