Mashatile Calls for Renewed Commitment on World AIDS Day

Deputy President Paul Mashatile marked World AIDS Day with a call for steady action in the fight against HIV. He said South Africa has made major progress, turning HIV from a fatal diagnosis into a condition that people can manage with treatment. But he warned that the work is not finished.

Mashatile said the country is at a point where science, public support, and firm leadership can help bring the epidemic to an end. He urged people to stay in care, support prevention efforts, and make sure no community is left behind.

He noted that treatment is widely available, but gaps remain in testing, access, and long-term adherence. Mashatile said closing those gaps is key to reducing new infections and protecting those already living with HIV.

World AIDS Day is observed each year to honour those lost to the disease, recognise the progress made, and push for stronger action. Mashatile said the day serves as a reminder that progress must continue and that partnerships between government, health workers, and communities remain essential.
