VeldCare Project Launches in Westonaria to Restore Degraded Land and Support Local Jobs

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has introduced a new VeldCare Project at Libalata Farm in Kaalbasfontein, Westonaria. The department says the work is part of its broader plan to protect the province’s natural veld and improve the condition of farming land affected by invasive plants.

Slangbos and other invasive weeds have spread across parts of the area, reducing grazing space and putting pressure on local farmers. The project will focus on clearing these plants and restoring sections of veld that have been damaged over time. Officials say this work is essential for improving soil health, preventing further land degradation, and supporting long-term agricultural activity.

Alongside the environmental work, the project will create short-term employment for 25 local residents. They will be hired through the Expanded Public Works Programme from December 2025 to February 2026. The department notes that these opportunities are aimed at easing unemployment while also giving participants practical experience in land management.

The launch included contracting sessions, Ministerial Determination training, the issuing of protective gear, and a full induction for all workers. Department representatives described the first day as smooth and well organised. They said the team is now prepared to begin fieldwork and apply the training they received.

VeldCare forms part of the province’s ongoing efforts to improve the condition of public and private land, tackle invasive species, and strengthen community involvement in environmental programmes. Officials say the department will monitor progress over the coming months to ensure the work meets its restoration goals and supports the communities involved.
