Gauteng 2025 Adjustment Budget Explained

Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile presented the 2025 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement and the provincial adjustment budget during a sitting of the legislature earlier today. He confirmed that the total adjustment amounts to R3.3 billion. This figure includes rollovers from unspent funds and new allocations from both national and provincial governments. He noted that R2.2 billion is being added to the fiscal envelope for the 2025 and 2026 financial years.

Maile detailed how the extra money will be used to ease pressure on essential public services. The Gauteng Department of Health will receive R1.1 billion to stabilize spending on goods and services and a further R90 million for hospital and clinic infrastructure. The Gauteng Department of Education is allocated R507.8 million. Of this amount, R200 million will go toward increased staff compensation, and the remainder will support scholar transport needs across the province.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development will receive R103.9 million. Around R35.5 million of this will support infrastructure work, and the balance will cover operational costs. The Gauteng Department of Community Safety is receiving R92.6 million to help address growing pressures linked to public safety and policing operations. Smaller allocations will support sectors such as arts and culture digital government platforms and provincial infrastructure as noted in IOL.

Maile explained that part of the additional funding comes from underspending recorded in previous financial cycles and part from revenue collected above initial projections. According to him the province is redirecting these resources to priority areas that require immediate intervention.
